Will Ashish Abrol Be the Next Director of the Enforcement Directorate?
Ashish Abrol's name is in circulation for Director, Enforcement Directorate — he is a 1993-batch IRS (IT) officer and batchmate of current ED chief Rahul Navin.
Ashish Abrol's name is in circulation for the post of Director, Enforcement Directorate. Abrol is a 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) officer, and a batchmate of the agency's current chief, Rahul Navin.
The Enforcement Directorate is India's federal agency for enforcing the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the Foreign Exchange Management Act and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, and its Director's post is one of the most closely watched appointments in the central law enforcement apparatus given the agency's role in high-profile financial crime and political corruption investigations.
Abrol has served across the Income Tax Department in postings including Principal Commissioner and Principal Director-level charges, and has held assessment and investigation-related roles over a career spanning more than three decades in the Income Tax cadre.
Rahul Navin, also a 1993-batch IRS (Income Tax) officer, has headed the ED since August 2024, after an earlier stint as Acting Director from 2023, a tenure that has included the agency's investigations tied to Arvind Kejriwal, K. Kavitha and the arrest of former UCO Bank chairman Subodh Kumar Goel, among other cases.
Any move to bring in a new Director would follow the pattern of recent ED leadership appointments, where officers from the Income Tax cadre with extensive investigation and assessment experience have been picked to head the agency, continuing the IRS (IT) cadre's hold on the post.
Whoever takes over the ED's top post inherits an agency currently handling a substantial caseload of money laundering and asset-attachment proceedings, alongside the scrutiny that comes with the agency's political salience.
No official order on the Director's post has been issued; Abrol's name remains one under discussion rather than a confirmed appointment.
