IPS Officer A Shiyas Appointed Inspector General in BSF on Deputation

A Shiyas, a 2008-batch IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been appointed Inspector General (IG) in the Border Security Force on deputation, according to an order issued this week.

The Border Security Force, raised in 1965 and functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is India's primary border-guarding force along the frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh. An Inspector General typically commands a Frontier or a Sector within the force, overseeing operational deployment, border infrastructure and coordination with state police in the assigned region.

IPS officers are eligible for central armed police force deputations, including to the BSF, after completing a minimum tenure in their home cadre — a route the Central Staffing Scheme uses to bring state-cadre policing experience into the paramilitary leadership structure.

The appointment notice did not specify Shiyas's outgoing posting in Madhya Pradesh or the Frontier he will take charge of within the BSF.

The move adds to a steady stream of state-cadre IPS officers moving into central armed police force leadership roles this year, a pattern that has continued as the Centre works through IG and Deputy Inspector General vacancies across the BSF, CRPF and ITBP.

The BSF's operational demands have grown along both the western and eastern borders in recent years, with IGs expected to balance conventional border-guarding duties against an expanding counter-infiltration and technology-surveillance mandate.

The deputation takes effect with immediate effect, as per the order.
