Two 1992-Batch IRS Officers Sunil Kumar Singh and Vatsala Jha Appointed CBDT Members

Sunil Kumar Singh and Vatsala Jha, both officers of the 1992 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), have been appointed Members of the Central Board of Direct Taxes.

The CBDT functions under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, as the statutory authority overseeing direct tax policy and the administration of the Income Tax Department. Each Member is assigned a specific functional portfolio by the Board, covering areas such as investigation, revenue, legislation or administration.

Both officers bring roughly three decades of service within the Income Tax Department to the Board, having progressed through the standard IRS (IT) career track of assessment, investigation and appellate postings before reaching Board-level empanelment.

The appointment notice did not specify the portfolios Singh and Jha will hold or their immediate preceding postings within the department.

Their elevation comes as the CBDT is also set to lose a Member this year, with Pankaj Mishra, a 1989-batch officer, confirmed to retire in October — placing the two new appointments within a broader churn at the Board's senior level.

As Members, Singh and Jha will take direct responsibility for specific verticals of tax administration, a step up from the zonal and regional oversight roles that typically precede Board-level appointment.

The appointment order did not specify the effective date of charge for either officer.
