Western Coalfields Limited Holds Tiranga Rally at Nagpur Headquarters Ahead of Independence Day

Western Coalfields Limited organised a Tiranga Rally from its headquarters in Nagpur on August 13, drawing officers and employees into a march as part of the government's Har Ghar Tiranga campaign ahead of Independence Day. The rally was flagged off and personally led by WCL Chairman and Managing Director Dr Hemant Sharad Pande.

The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, now in its fifth year since its 2022 launch, asks households across the country to hoist the national flag at home around Independence Day, and public sector undertakings such as WCL have used the occasion to organise employee rallies at their headquarters and mining areas. For a coal PSU with a large workforce spread across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, the Nagpur rally served both as a patriotic observance and as a visible show of participation from a company whose day-to-day operations rarely draw public attention.

Dr Pande, addressing employees before the rally, spoke about the history of the national flag and paid tribute to freedom fighters, framing WCL's coal production as a contribution to the country's energy security and industrial development. Officers and employees at the gathering collectively recited Vande Mataram before the march began, a practice WCL has followed at previous Independence Day observances at its headquarters.

Western Coalfields Limited is a subsidiary of Coal India Limited operating coalfields across Nagpur, Chandrapur, Wani, and other coal-bearing regions of Maharashtra and adjoining parts of Madhya Pradesh, and ranks among the larger coal-producing subsidiaries within the Coal India group. Dr Pande has headed the company as Chairman and Managing Director through a period in which Coal India's subsidiaries have been pushed to increase output to reduce India's dependence on imported coal for power generation.

Senior WCL officials who accompanied Dr Pande during the rally included Director (Finance) Bikram Ghosh, Director Technical (Operations) Sandeep Paranjape, and Chief Vigilance Officer Ajay Madhukar Mhetre, reflecting participation from across the company's functional leadership rather than a single department. The presence of the full board-level team at the rally is consistent with how WCL has organised similar employee events in the past, using headquarters gatherings to bring together officers from finance, operations and vigilance.

Dr Pande told employees that coal produced through safe and scientific mining at WCL supports power generation, industrial output and several other sectors of the economy, and that every employee contributes to nation-building through their work at the company. He urged officers and employees to hoist the tricolour at their own homes as part of the wider Har Ghar Tiranga campaign running up to August 15.

The rally concluded with employees raising slogans on the theme of national unity and pride, a scene WCL has repeated at its Nagpur headquarters in previous years around the Independence Day period. Similar Har Ghar Tiranga observances were organised across WCL's area offices in the days leading up to August 15, with area general managers replicating the headquarters programme on a smaller scale at their respective coalfield locations.

WCL's participation in this year's campaign follows a pattern common to Coal India's subsidiaries, several of which have used the run-up to Independence Day to combine flag-hoisting observances with messaging around the coal sector's role in national energy security. The company's Nagpur rally drew coverage within local media as one of the larger corporate participations in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign in the city this year.
