IPS Officer Shraddha Tiwari Promoted to Deputy Inspector General

Shraddha Tiwari, an IPS officer of the 2012 batch from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police, according to an order issued by the state Home Department this week. She was serving in the Selection Grade, equivalent to the Superintendent of Police level, prior to her elevation.

The DIG rank sits above Superintendent of Police in the state police hierarchy and typically carries charge of a police range covering multiple districts, or a specialised state-level unit such as intelligence, training, or crime investigation. Promotion to DIG marks an officer's entry into the senior supervisory tier of state policing, with responsibility shifting from direct district command to broader oversight of law enforcement operations across a wider jurisdiction and, often, a supervisory role over several Superintendents of Police at once.

Tiwari's promotion followed the standard process under the Indian Police Service (Pay) Rules, 2016, which govern time-scale and selection-grade progression for IPS officers. Her batch, commissioned in 2012, is now moving into the DIG tier roughly on the timeline the service typically follows for officers with strong service records, reflecting steady progression through the Madhya Pradesh cadre's district and range postings over more than a decade of service in a state that runs one of the country's larger state police forces.

She held Selection Grade rank, at the Superintendent of Police level, immediately before this promotion, a position that typically comes with charge of a district or a specialised wing within the state police force, and that serves as the standard stepping stone to DIG rank.

The promotion is part of the state's routine cadre review process, under which IPS officers move up the rank hierarchy based on years of service and vacancy availability at each level, rather than reflecting any specific posting change announced alongside it. Madhya Pradesh, like most states, conducts these reviews periodically to align rank strength with sanctioned vacancies.

Tiwari's elevation adds to the pool of women officers holding DIG rank in the Madhya Pradesh police, a force that has gradually increased representation of women at senior supervisory levels over the past decade, though women officers remain a minority at the DIG level and above across most state police forces.
