Ministry of Power Begins Search for Next NTPC Chairman and Managing Director

The Ministry of Power has initiated the process to appoint the next Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC Limited, with the vacancy set to arise following the completion of the extended tenure of Gurdeep Singh, the company's outgoing chief.

A Search-cum-Selection Committee has invited applications from eligible candidates ahead of a specified deadline, a process typically used for the most senior central public sector enterprise appointments where the pool of eligible candidates may extend beyond the organisation's own internal executives to include qualified candidates from other public sector enterprises or, in some cases, the private sector.

NTPC is India's largest power generation public sector enterprise, operating a substantial share of the country's thermal and increasingly renewable power generation capacity, making the Chairman and Managing Director position one of the most consequential leadership roles within India's power sector given the company's scale and its central role in national electricity generation.

Gurdeep Singh's tenure, which the current search process is set to conclude, had already been extended beyond its originally scheduled term, a common practice for senior public sector enterprise leadership when a successor selection process requires additional time or when continuity is considered valuable during a particular operational period.

The selection process is being coordinated through the Ministry of Power, with the final appointment subject to clearance from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet once the Search-cum-Selection Committee completes its evaluation.
